Great activity overall, I recommend it. Be aware that the audio guide is not included; it costs an extra €5. The audio guide also had an AI voice that wasn't very interesting. Otherwise, this is a must-do when visiting Prague! Great 20-minute introduction with guides who speak all languages.

We had a fantastic two-and-a-half-hour tour of the castle with Ross, and it was worth every minute. Ross was extremely knowledgeable, engaging, and passionate about the history of the castle. He explained everything clearly, added fascinating details and stories, and kept the tour lively and interesting throughout. The pace was perfect, never rushed, and he was always happy to answer questions. Ross made the history come alive and really enhanced our visit. Highly recommended - one of the highlights of our trip.

Vysehrad Highlights

The Tábor Gate

The Tabor Gate, which leads to the Vyšehrad complex from Pankrác or the Vyšehrad metro station, was erected in 1640 as a safeguard for travelers to the Prague outskirts from south Bohemia via Tábor and Benešov. It's a stone archway with a tower passage that's closed on both sides by massive stone doors. The top floor housed the police station, the trapdoor's control room, and a shooting corridor. In 1931, a footpath was built here for pedestrians.

How to Reach Tábor Gate

Rotunda of St. Martin

The Rotunda of St. Martin is the only Romanesque building in Vyšehrad which has been completely preserved. As the oldest structure of Prague, there is a vast history around it. Built in the year 1100, it was initially surrounded by a cemetery till the year 1300. The building survived the devastating Hussite Wars and was thereafter used as a prison for the Town of the Vyšehrad Hill. It was a gunpowder storage unit during the Thirty Years’ War, from 1700 to 1750.

Basilica of St. Peter and St. Paul

The ringing of bells from the collegiate church, which has undergone a variety of renovations in the 950 years since it was founded, fills the Vyšehrad region once each hour. It was finally finished in 1903, giving the Basilica of St. Peter & St. Paul its current neo-Gothic form. The Basilica is located within the Vyšehrad complex. Vyšehrad is a historic stronghold in Prague that sits atop a cliff above the Vltava River.

Vysehrad Cemetery

Located adjacent to the Basilica of St. Peter and St. Paul, Vysehrad cemetery is one of Prague’s most significant sites, with over 600 famous people buried here – from writers, doctors, and scientists, to poets, artists, actors, composers, and politicians. Among the many imminent personalities buried here, some famed names are the poet Jan Neruda, composer Antonin Dvorak, and the writer Božena Němcová.

Vysehrad Casemates

The Vyšehrad Casemates came to exist in the 17th or 18th century during the construction of bastion fortification. The casemates are a complex underground system meant for rapid troop movement. The Vyšehrad casemates are around 1.6 m wide and 2.6 m tall, with ventilation shafts every few meters that open into the fortifications. In some places inside the casemates, there are passages with loopholes for small arms and alcoves in which soldiers used to keep their weapons and other equipment.

Gorlice Hall

The largest casemate space in Vyšehrad is the Gorlice Hall. This massive hall would serve as an assembly area for the troops and as a warehouse for armament and food in case of an imminent attack. The hall has also served as a bomb shelter. Now, this impressive hall is used as a gallery as some of the Baroque statues from Charles Bridge are now stored here.
